Expanded Functions Dental Assistant
· Formal/hands-on certification course is developed to provide Dental Healthcare Team members with those expanded functions which may be performed under the supervision of a dentist and for which formal training is required by the Florida State Board of Dentistry, Code R. 64B5-16.005.
· The Expanded Functions course provided by SFDA consists of up- to-date theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical and Lab experiences. Students will be trained in all aspects of Expanded Duties, developing high confidence at work.
· Demonstration of competency and satisfactory completion of written and clinical examinations are required..


Program description
Students/teacher ratio
1:5 (instructor/students)
We are providing a teacher/student ratio of 1:5 to enhance and optimize learning experience.
Prerequisites
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Previous Dental Assistant course.
Minimum of three months of experience as a general practice chair-side dental assistant or hygienist. Volunteer and shadowing experience does not fulfill this 3-month requirement.
Assigned acknowledgement of meeting the three months training from your supervising Dentist.
All material to be used will be included in the program cost!


Program Objectives
After studying all materials and resources presented in the course, the student will be able to:
Understand the Laws and rules for Dental Assistants in Florida.
Demonstrate and practice disinfection and sterilization procedures according to OSHA standards.
Explain how nutrition and lifestyle affect the oral health of patients.
Place and remove matrices.
Place and remove temporary restorations.
Apply bases, cavity liners and varnishes.
Perfecting and expediting the preparation of temporary crowns.
Cement temporary crowns and bridges with temporary cement, with maximum efficiency.
Apply pit and fissure sealants.
Apply topical fluoride.
Place and remove rubber dam.
Pack and remove retraction cord.
Remove sutures.
Place surgical and periodontal dressings.
Polish clinical crowns of teeth for stain removal.
Polish dental restorations.
Make alginate impressions for diagnostic casts.
Familiarize with intraoral scanning.
